I Am Simply a Blank Sheet of Paper

A poem about dependence, possibility, authorship, and the relationship between a page and its maker.

I am simply a blank sheet of paper.

There is nothing about me that would grab your attention.

I leave no lasting impression on those who gaze at me.

I exist only to be used.

I exist to pass along a message.

I exist to embrace the will of another.

I take in and give out only what another provides.

What else can I do?

I have no will of my own.

I have no method of carrying out even the simplest of tasks.

Without a Master, I have no purpose.

Without a Master I can do nothing.

Without a Master, I am simply a blank sheet of paper.

I am simply a blank sheet of paper.

A modified version of an oak or fir.

Left to myself, there is nothing to me.

Nothing to enjoy, nothing to see.

My purpose is to represent potential.

Left to myself, I am inconsequential.

Without a master, I will sit, I will rot.

I will pass from a state of being to a state of not.

When I go, no one will miss me, not one will notice.

It takes no amount of intelligence to know this.

I am the deep pool of imagination, creativity, and accomplishment.

I am the place for energy to be spent.

After all, without me, where would you be?

But without you, what becomes of me?

Without a master, I simply sit, and waste possibility.

All the great wonders and accomplishments of the world were started and finished with the concept I represent.

Possibility.

You cannot give adequate explanation to why you believe it exists,

For to justify possibility is to begin with the belief it is possible to explain why it exists.

It is like using language to justify language, or reason to justify reason.
